    book it! aka travel, life

Book It! Series | Amazon Travel Essentials.

These are some of my must-have travel essentials from Amazon.

Stylin’ Sunnies: These sunnies are SO cute, versatile and such a good value under $15, so you don’t need to feel too bad if they get lost or broken by a toddler.

All-In-One Travel Charger: This charger has been a game-changer. It charges your iPhone, Apple Watch and Airpods all at once (and very fast). It’s greatly reduced the bulky cords and plug-ins that I was previously carrying. A MUST HAVE!

Collapsible Storage Tote: We use this tote ALL the time. It’s great for day-to-day (errands, road trip entertainment, soccer practice, etc. etc.), but also a great travel tote, as it collapses, so easy to stick into a suitcase pocket to use while you’re away.

Dyson AirWrap Travel Case: I am obsessed with my AirWrap, which makes it hard to travel without it. The case it came with is beautiful, but unfortunately very bulky and sitting idle on a closet shelf. Previously, I was throwing all the attachments into a random bag and packing the AirWrap on its own, BUT this case holds it all and keeps my beloved investment safe.

Packing Cubes: Ever since I started using packing cubes, I haven’t looked back. We have cubes in a few different colors, which makes it easy to differentiate between family members clothing when we’re all traveling together. They help keep everything organized, consolidated and you can easily throw them into drawers if you’re somewhere for a longer period and want to “move in” a bit. I also get weird about hotel drawers, so they act as a little barrier for you fellow germaphobes out there.

Silicone Makeup Brush Holder: I used to work for a makeup brush company, so I have a ton of brushes and have used ALL the options for travel. This is by far the best holder I’ve found. It’s silicone, so easy to clean and it’s very lightweight (don’t need to waste my poundage on a makeup brush holder)! It’s large enough to hold the essentials, but not too large where you find yourself packing brushes you likely won’t need. Really helps you think through what is actually necessary to travel with!

Compact Vitamin Organizer: LOVE this compact little organizer. I can fit a stash of meds and my vitamins in here vs. throwing the bottles into a bag.

Luggage Scale: This is 100% a necessity for me. I maximize ALL the space and weight when I travel, so I need to know exactly how much I am working with to avoid the airport shuffle. The airport is already stressful enough, so avoid showing your fellow passengers your underwear in the check-in line 🙂

Travel Toothbrush: I use a regular Sonicare at home, but it’s a little bulky to travel with. Enter the Sonicare One. It’s very slender and packs well, so you don’t have to sacrifice your dental health on the road.

Note: I am a member of the Amazon Associates program and get a small cut of any sale purchased through my Amazon links.

5 Things No One Tells You About Having a Baby

I realize I should have written this post about a year ago when Zoe was born, but I was a little preoccupied…as you are when you have a newborn.

There are loads of tidbits I learned over the past year, but I wanted to share the top 5 things I learned in the first month after she was born.

ONE – It’s okay to send your baby to the nursery.

I always imagined Zoe’s first few days in the hospital to be this blissful bonding time in a hotel-like hospital room that offered “rooming in”. Little did I know, I’d be running on 2 nights of little to virtually no sleep when she was born and recovering from a 24+hr labor and c-section. Whew – I am tired just recalling it. She was born at 8:22AM and we tried our hardest to watch her all day and night, but once 3AM hit, we just knew we had to get some shut eye so we could be our best selves for Day #2. We apologized profusely to the nurse as she wheeled her away to the nursery. 4 hours later and I have never felt so refreshed. It was a hard decision to make, but we both needed rest after an emotional and physically draining few days. If you’re thinking about it – just do it. Trust me. Your body needs it and your baby will not remember!

TWO – Breastfeeding does not come naturally to everyone.

This could easily be it’s own book series, but in short, breastfeeding does not come naturally to all of us. I had a lot of issues with getting Zoe to latch and it didn’t help that I wasn’t producing anything until about a week after she was born. I talked to lactation consultants, read articles and blogs like mad, but still could never get the hang of it. After a few weeks of trying, I made the decision to exclusively pump. Once I came to the realization that it was the best option for our family, it was like a weight was lifted. Exclusively pumping is no joke and a huge commitment, but I knew she was getting the nutrients she needed and we were bonding just fine. Do whatever you need to do to make sure your baby is healthy. Whether it’s breastfeeding, formula or pumping, it’s no one’s decision but yours to make.

    THREE – The swelling!

I was kind of waiting for the swelling to kick in during my pregnancy, but didn’t have it until the last month or so and even then it wasn’t terrible. I definitely did not know it would get worse after having the baby! My calfs and feet swelled up like balloons from all the extra fluids. I was so thankful I purchased a pair of Birkenstocks while pregnant and could adjust them to fit my giant balloon feet. They were the only shoes that fit me for about a month after having Zoe. Speaking of swelling…

    FOUR – Night sweats.

No one warned me about night sweats and it was one of the worst things to deal with post-partum! Yes, I know there are A TON of things that happen to your body after giving birth and everyone’s recovery is different, but I will warn you – this happens! I had a ton of extra fluids in my body from my IV from the epidural and surgery, so maybe mine was more than others, but as I said, I was extremely swollen and all that fluid had to get out somehow. From the few hours a night we did sleep, it was hard for me to get comfortable because I was so sweaty! I had to sleep on a towel for a few weeks and was so thankful when it finally subsided. Consider yourself warned.

FIVE – Don’t forget to eat!

The first few weeks after having baby are basically survival mode. We had no idea what we were doing, Zoe was overall a pretty good baby, but she had her moments. I was lucky to have Luke home with me for 3 weeks, especially since I was pumping, but his first day back to work I was absolutely terrified. It felt like we were coming home from the hospital all over again. It’s a constant 3 hour routine that seems neverending and some days were much harder than others. I recall one day having my “breakfast” at 3PM simply because I did not have time to go downstairs and make something. After that day, I stocked up on granola bars and these energy bite bars from Costco. A girlfriend also gave me a really great tip and said to buy frozen burritos that you can hold with one hand. Genius! It’s so important to eat, especially if you’re breastfeeding or pumping.

I know this is just the tip of the iceberg, but those are just a few things that have really stuck with me – even a year after. I am sure if I wrote this in the moment, it would be a list of 100 things 🙂

Oh, and one last piece of advice – get professional newborn photos done! I am so thankful we will have those precious photos forever.

around town, baby, home projects, life

    Hello! Some life updates.

Oh, hi there! It's been a while. Almost a year to be exact…

As you can imagine, the past year has flew by. I can't believe Luke and I were in Arizona this time last year on our Babymoon soaking up the sun! These days our lives are filled with diapers, house projects, work and trying to relax when we can.

This outlet has taken a backseat to life, which I'm 100% okay with, but I would like to carve out more time to post every once and again. So, without further ado, here is what Luke and I have been up to the past year…

    1. We had a baby! I was due at the end of July, but she showed us her stubborn side before even meeting her and cooked for an extra TWO weeks (that experience can be a blog post of it's own)! Zoe Lynn Wagner was born on August 7, 2018. She is a happy, healthy baby girl and we are more in love with her than I could ever imagine. I even think her little poops are cute. Zoe
    2. We bought a house! Luke and I had been searching for a new home for over a year and we finally found "the one" last fall. We took a brief hiatus from searching towards the end of my pregnancy and the first couple months of Zoe's life. We knew we didn't want to be moving with a newborn, and I'm so glad we made that decision. Our little apartment was perfect for the 3 of us, but as the days went on, we realized very quickly that we'd need to find a larger space. We originally saw the home in September and put our first offer in, fast forward a few months and offers later, our offer was finally accepted at the end of November. We closed at the beginning of January…did some fun stuff, then moved at the end of January, on my birthday! This leads me to my next point…Closing Day
    3. We are going to be on House Hunters! I applied a couple years ago when we first started to look, only to find out they don't even audition you until you have a closing date! Sorry people, it's all a sham. I re-applied once we did have our closing date, we auditioned, and bam we were casted! It all happened very fast. It was very exciting, but we also found out we couldn't really do any house projects or move into our house until it was filmed. We basically filmed, did some major house projects, worked at our real jobs and moved all in a week. Oh, and Luke threw his back out the day before we moved so he was down for the count for a couple weeks. Needless to say, January was a whirlwind.House Hunters

February and March have definitely been a little slower for us, which has been great! We've been able to actually live in our new home as a family, figure out the house quirks, decide what we want to do next and look forward to our first spring in the new house.

I'm planning some posts and will share more about life with Zoe, house projects, our experience on House Hunters and anything else life randomly throws our way. Bye for now! I promise it won't be another year before my next post 🙂

    XO,

    Jenny
